The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela last Wednesday has climbed to 1,450, according to Antigua News Room, citing Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez.
Rodriguez made the announcement on Sunday, as rescue teams continued to work through the rubble of collapsed buildings across the country. Images from the affected areas show the scale of the destruction, with crews operating heavy excavation equipment at collapse sites in the Chacao district and in La Guaira state.
Photos from June 28, 2026 document the grim scene across multiple affected communities. In Caraballeda, La Guaira state, rescuers were pictured recovering victims' bodies from debris, while displaced residents rested in open squares nearby. In Catia La Mar, emergency tents were erected on a baseball field to shelter those left homeless by the disaster.
In Playa Grande, also in La Guaira state, members of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces were deployed alongside civilian rescue teams, navigating streets lined with damaged structures. Residents in some areas were seen retrieving personal belongings from the wreckage of their homes.
The dual earthquakes have caused widespread structural damage across several communities, with search and rescue operations ongoing. The full extent of casualties and infrastructure damage has yet to be determined as recovery efforts continue.
