A routine inter-island ferry crossing turned into a dramatic rescue operation Monday after the Apple Syder began taking on water and partially submerged shortly after departing Basseterre, St. Kitts.
According to Antigua.news, all 47 passengers and crew members aboard were safely rescued following a swift response by the St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard and other emergency personnel.
Initial reports indicate the vessel encountered difficulties within minutes of departing on its scheduled voyage to Nevis, triggering an emergency response. Videos circulating on social media showed frightened passengers wearing life jackets floating in the sea as rescue teams raced to the scene. Responders were seen pulling people from the water as the ferry slowly submerged.
Despite the harrowing ordeal, all persons on board were brought to safety. No fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew confirmed he had been briefed on the incident. Nevis Premier Mark Brantley also acknowledged the situation, stating he was receiving updates as the rescue operation unfolded.
