The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre has launched mandatory Ebola response training for its clinical staff, strengthening the hospital's readiness for potential infectious disease emergencies.
According to Antigua News Room, the training is being coordinated by the hospital's Infectious Disease and Employee Health Division in partnership with the Learning and Development Unit. The programme equips healthcare workers with the skills to identify possible Ebola cases, apply correct infection control measures, and safely manage patients while minimising transmission risk.
Hospital administrators say the initiative reflects the institution's commitment to maintaining a high standard of emergency preparedness, even in the absence of any reported Ebola cases in Antigua and Barbuda.
An initial cohort of healthcare professionals has already completed the programme. Additional staff are expected to undergo the training in phases.
Officials emphasised that ongoing education and preparedness are essential components of the hospital's infection prevention strategy, and that the training will help ensure a swift, coordinated response should an infectious disease threat emerge.
