The president of the Antigua and Barbuda Chapter of the Women in Maritime Association (WiMAC) has issued a message calling for safer and more equitable workplaces across the maritime industry, marking this year's Day of the Seafarer on June 25.
According to Antigua News Room, the message was delivered by Ms. Shenica Sebastian, who used the occasion to align the local chapter with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its global network of sister associations in honoring maritime professionals worldwide.
This year's theme — "Carrying World Trade. Carrying the Risks" — served as the backdrop for Sebastian's appeal, underscoring that while seafarers are responsible for moving 90 percent of global trade, they must not be left to shoulder the burden of unsafe working conditions.
"We extend our deepest gratitude to our seafarers for their resilience," Sebastian said in her message. "Alongside the IMO and the global Women in Maritime Associations, we remain steadfast in safeguarding these essential workers."
The WiMAC president called on stakeholders across the industry to champion workplace cultures built on safety, equity, and progress. Key priorities highlighted included the establishment of zero-tolerance frameworks against harassment, the promotion of inclusive leadership, and the creation of secure reporting mechanisms for workers.
"Through these collaborative efforts, we remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering a safe, equitable, and exemplary maritime sector for all," Sebastian said.
Day of the Seafarer is observed annually on June 25 under the auspices of the IMO.
