Saleim Harrigan has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the abduction and murder of Principal Customs Officer Nigel Christian, a killing that shook Antigua and Barbuda in the summer of 2020.

According to Antigua News Room, the High Court ruled on Thursday that Harrigan must serve a minimum of 40 years before becoming eligible for parole review. The court further ordered that time already spent in custody will count toward the sentence.

Harrigan was convicted earlier this year in connection with Christian's July 2020 killing. Prosecutors established that Christian was abducted from his home in McKinnons before his body was later discovered in Thibou's, bearing gunshot wounds.

The case drew widespread public attention and became one of the most closely watched criminal trials in the nation's recent history.

Harrigan's co-accused, Wayne Thomas and Lasean Bully, were acquitted earlier in the proceedings.

The sentencing brings to a close one of Antigua and Barbuda's most significant murder prosecutions in recent years.
