Antigua and Barbuda is among the Caribbean nations being celebrated during Caribbean American Heritage Month in Philadelphia, where community leaders are spotlighting the enduring contributions of Caribbean nationals to the city's cultural and civic fabric.
According to Antigua News Room, Danielle Mellanson, president of the United Caribbean Association of Philadelphia (UCAP), spoke proudly of representing both Antigua and Barbuda and Saint Kitts and Nevis within the Philadelphia community.
"Being of Caribbean descent and living in Philadelphia means the world to me. I am proud of my heritage and cultural background mixed with a little Philly flair," Mellanson said.
Mellanson pointed to the annual Philly Caribbean Carnival as the moment when Caribbean culture is most visible in the city, describing the event as a celebration of freedom, resilience, resistance and the shared heritage of Caribbean people.
The feature, published as part of the Heritage Month coverage, also profiled community leaders representing Guyana and Jamaica. Those leaders described the strong presence of their respective communities throughout Philadelphia, expressed through cultural organisations, businesses, churches and public service.
As reported by Antigua News Room, the publication noted that Caribbean Americans continue to play a significant role in shaping Philadelphia's social, cultural and civic life, while actively preserving the traditions and identities of their home countries.
