A daring early-morning robbery attempt in Tobago has drawn widespread attention after thieves used a stolen backhoe to try to rip an ATM from a commercial building — an incident that has drawn comparisons to scenes from a Hollywood crime thriller. According to Antigua.news, the failed heist is the latest in a series of increasingly bold criminal acts being recorded across the Caribbean, including several high-profile incidents in Antigua and Barbuda.
The audacious operation unfolded on Wednesday in Plymouth, Tobago, when two masked men confronted three estate constables on duty at the YMCA and Beach Sports Facility in Courland. The suspects demanded — and obtained — the keys to a yellow Caterpillar backhoe and a white Mazda truck.
The thieves then drove the stolen vehicles to Supreme Plaza on Shelbourne Street, where a First Citizens Bank ATM was housed. Using the backhoe, they smashed into the structure and attempted to extract the machine's vault. CCTV footage reportedly captured the entire operation, which lasted only minutes but caused significant structural damage to the building.
Their plans ultimately failed, however, when the arm of the backhoe was damaged during the operation, preventing them from gaining access to the cash inside. The suspects abandoned the heavy equipment at the scene and fled in the stolen truck, leaving behind a wrecked building and an ATM that remained intact despite their efforts.
Police later recovered the truck at Adventure Trace. Authorities confirmed the men fled empty-handed and remain at large.
The incident has intensified regional concern over the growing boldness of criminal activity. In recent months, Antigua and Barbuda has recorded a number of brazen robberies, home invasions and thefts that have sparked public debate about crime and security. Other Caribbean territories have reported similarly daring offences, pointing to a broader and troubling trend across the region.
For many observers, the failed Tobago raid raises an uncomfortable question: just how far are criminals prepared to go as robberies across the Caribbean become increasingly bold and sophisticated?
