A Vincentian man accused of striking national cyclist Tahje Browne with a rental vehicle and then attempting to flee the country has pleaded guilty to all charges connected to the incident.
According to Antigua.news, Kishroy Harry appeared before the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday morning and admitted to dangerous driving, driving without the owner's consent, driving without a valid driver's licence, and driving without insurance.
The charges stem from a June 20 collision along Sir Sydney Walling Highway, near the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board, in which Browne was struck while riding his bicycle. The crash drew widespread public attention after video footage circulated on social media.
Browne, one of Antigua and Barbuda's top competitive cyclists, was rushed to hospital following the incident and subsequently underwent surgery. He is reported to be recovering.
Police investigations revealed that Harry allegedly disposed of the clothing he was wearing at the time of the crash before attempting to board a flight to St. Vincent the following day. He was intercepted at V.C. Bird International Airport on June 21 and arrested and charged shortly thereafter.
With guilty pleas entered on all four counts, the case now proceeds to sentencing. Harry is expected to return to court on July 1, when a magistrate will determine his punishment.
The case has generated significant public interest, particularly among the local sporting community, where many have continued to rally around Browne throughout his recovery.
