Commissioner of Police Everton Jeffers has issued a stern warning to motorists that leaving the scene of a traffic accident constitutes a criminal offence, after a video showing a driver abandoning an injured cyclist spread widely across social media.
According to Antigua Observer, the footage shows the driver of a Toyota Vitz briefly checking on the injured cyclist before fleeing the scene without rendering further assistance or alerting authorities.
The video's rapid circulation online prompted the Commissioner to address the public directly, underscoring that such behaviour carries serious legal consequences under Antiguan law.
Commissioner Jeffers urged all drivers to remain at the scene of any accident they are involved in, regardless of fault, and to cooperate fully with emergency services and law enforcement personnel who respond.
