A joint police and Customs operation at V.C. Bird International Airport has resulted in the seizure of 34 pounds of suspected cannabis valued at an estimated EC$204,000, according to Antigua.news.
The operation took place Thursday afternoon at the LIAT Cargo Shed, where officers from the Narcotics Department and Customs Enforcement personnel searched a package that had raised suspicion. Inside a brown cardboard box, investigators found 34 vacuum-sealed packages containing a bushy substance believed to be cannabis.
Authorities immediately seized the find and transported it to Police Headquarters for further examination. Investigators have since launched efforts to determine the shipment's origin and identify those responsible for its transportation.
No arrests have been announced in connection with the discovery. Investigations remain ongoing.
The seizure represents another significant drug interdiction effort by local authorities as they continue to target the movement of illegal narcotics through the country's ports of entry. The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda stated that it remains committed to working alongside Customs officials and regional and international law enforcement partners in combating drug trafficking and other transnational crimes.
