Minister of Health, Wellness, Environment, and Civil Service Affairs Michael Joseph met with Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, Executive Director of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, on the sidelines of the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum 2026. According to Antigua News Room, the discussions centred on the distinct vulnerabilities facing Small Island Developing States and the growing impacts of climate change on infrastructure, housing, public health, livelihoods, and national development.

Minister Joseph used the meeting to reinforce Antigua and Barbuda's longstanding advocacy for equitable access to climate finance. He stressed the urgency of ensuring that countries most exposed to climate impacts can access timely and adequate support to address loss and damage stemming from climate-related events.

The talks also examined opportunities to deepen collaboration between Antigua and Barbuda and the Fund, with a focus on resilience-building initiatives and recovery efforts in vulnerable communities. The Minister drew attention to the realities confronting small island states, where increasingly severe weather events can produce social and economic consequences that reach far beyond immediate disaster response.

Both the Executive Director and the Minister agreed on the importance of operationalizing financing mechanisms capable of effectively responding to the needs of countries experiencing climate-related loss and damage, and of ensuring that vulnerable populations receive the support required to recover and rebuild.

Minister Joseph reaffirmed Antigua and Barbuda's commitment to international cooperation on climate action and welcomed continued global efforts to strengthen support systems for countries on the frontlines of climate change.

The Minister was accompanied by Antigua and Barbuda's Climate Ambassador, Ruleta Camacho-Thomas, who continues to advance the country's climate advocacy and engagement at the international level.
