The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has received a detailed briefing from the Minister of Agriculture on the outcomes of his recent official visit to Japan, where the delegation held high-level meetings aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation in agriculture, fisheries, marine conservation, education, and sustainable development.
The Minister reported productive discussions with senior Japanese officials, including representatives of Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A central focus of those talks was securing technical and financial assistance for the refurbishment and modernisation of Antigua and Barbuda's fisheries infrastructure. Japanese officials outlined the appropriate channels for pursuing grant funding and technical cooperation opportunities, including engagement with Japan's diplomatic representatives in the region.
Cabinet was also informed that discussions addressed the modernisation of fish and vegetable markets and related facilities. The goal is to improve food security, strengthen value chains, and expand opportunities for local producers and vendors.
The delegation additionally met with representatives of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and affiliated organisations, which have a long history of supporting marine and fisheries initiatives across the Caribbean and other developing regions. Those discussions explored potential collaboration on the growing sargassum seaweed challenge, including the possible establishment of a seaweed management and processing facility in Antigua and Barbuda. Cabinet noted that such a facility could deliver both environmental and economic benefits while helping to mitigate the adverse effects of sargassum on coastal communities and the tourism sector.
Educational and cultural cooperation also featured prominently in the Japan talks. Japanese officials expressed interest in expanding student exchange programmes and fostering stronger academic partnerships between institutions in both countries. Cabinet welcomed the prospect of greater educational cooperation, particularly in marine sciences, agriculture, technology, and innovation.
Broader discussions in Japan underscored the importance of sustainable ocean management, marine conservation, and robust legal and policy frameworks to support investment in the blue economy. The Government of Antigua and Barbuda reaffirmed its commitment to advancing policies that protect marine resources while generating new opportunities for sustainable economic growth.
Cabinet welcomed the overall outcomes of the visit and expressed confidence that the relationships established and strengthened during the mission will yield tangible benefits for the people of Antigua and Barbuda in the years ahead.
