Staff at the National Archives of Antigua and Barbuda remain unable to return to their workplace due to a leaking roof, even as critical climate control upgrades have reduced the immediate threat to the nation's irreplaceable historical documents.
According to Antigua Observer, National Archives Director Gavin Emmanuel confirmed in an exclusive interview that crews from the Public Works Department carried out extensive repairs at the facility. The climate control improvements have helped stabilize conditions for the preservation of historical records housed there.
However, the persistent roof leak continues to prevent staff from resuming normal on-site operations, leaving employees working from home until the structural issue is fully resolved.
The situation raises concerns about the long-term care and accessibility of the Archives' collections, which contain documents of significant historical and cultural value to Antigua and Barbuda. While the upgraded climate controls represent a meaningful step forward in preservation efforts, the ongoing roofing problem underscores the broader infrastructure challenges facing the institution.
No timeline for the completion of roof repairs has been publicly announced.
