A 59-year-old American tourist has died following a scuba diving excursion off the coast of North Sound on Monday afternoon, according to Antigua.news.
The man, who most recently resided in North Carolina, had been vacationing in Antigua with family members. He arrived in the country on June 5 and was scheduled to depart on June 13.
At approximately 3:15 p.m., the visitor was participating in a scuba diving activity near Red Head and Rabbit Island when he became unresponsive. He was subsequently transported to the mainland near Shell Beach, where emergency responders were alerted.
Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived at the scene and transferred him to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre. Despite efforts by medical staff to assist him, a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival at approximately 4:36 p.m.
Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. An autopsy is expected to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The Police Administration has extended its condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
