The Opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) is calling for the establishment of a new parliamentary watchdog body with the authority to summon witnesses and hold the government accountable over the Citizenship by Investment Programme (CIP).
According to Antigua Observer, the UPP has stated that Parliament must create a dedicated oversight committee for the CIP, arguing that no mechanism currently exists to hold the government to account on the programme's operations.
The Opposition maintains that Parliament already possesses the legal authority to establish such a committee, making the move both feasible and necessary. The UPP's push signals growing concern within opposition ranks over transparency and accountability surrounding the CIP, one of Antigua and Barbuda's key economic instruments.
