Minister of Social and Urban Transformation Kiz Johnson is calling on Antiguans and Barbudans to honour the nation's oldest citizens, describing centenarians as an invaluable source of wisdom, resilience and lived experience.
According to Antigua News Room, Johnson issued the appeal in a message marking Centenarians Week 2026, saying the observance presents an opportunity to recognise not only those who have reached 100 years of age, but also the families, caregivers, healthcare workers and community organisations that support them.
"Our centenarians have contributed immeasurably to the development of our communities and our nation," Johnson said. "Through their work, sacrifice, family, leadership, and commitment to community life, they have helped lay the foundation upon which subsequent generations continue to build."
Johnson said her ministry remains committed to building communities that are inclusive, accessible and supportive of older persons.
"We must continue to foster environments where seniors remain connected, engaged, respected, and valued members of our society," she said.
The minister also encouraged greater interaction between young people and senior citizens, noting that younger generations stand to benefit from the experiences of those who have lived through a century of change.
"The wisdom of our elders remains one of our greatest national resources," Johnson said.
Johnson extended congratulations to all centenarians and their families, wishing them a joyful and meaningful Centenarians Week.
