Dr. Vonetta George, Chief of Surgery at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, has earned international recognition after being named a finalist for the 2026 Global Doctor, Innovation and Leadership Award — one of the most prestigious honours presented by the Caribbean Global Awards.

Dr. George joins a distinguished group of healthcare professionals from across the Caribbean and beyond, recognised for excellence in medicine, innovation, and leadership. Her nomination reflects years of dedication to patient care, clinical excellence, and the advancement of surgical services in Antigua and Barbuda.

Minister of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs, the Honourable Michael Joseph, was among the first to congratulate Dr. George on the achievement.

"Dr. Vonetta George's selection as a finalist for this prestigious international award is a tremendous accomplishment and a reflection of her unwavering commitment to healthcare excellence," Minister Joseph said. The Minister added that the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda are proud of her achievement and wished her success at the upcoming awards ceremony.

The Ministry of Health also commended Dr. George for her significant contribution to strengthening the nation's healthcare system and for serving as a role model to aspiring medical professionals.

Her nomination highlights the calibre of healthcare professionals serving Antigua and Barbuda and underscores the important work being carried out at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.

The winner of the Global Doctor, Innovation and Leadership Award 2026 will be announced at the Caribbean Global Awards Gala, scheduled for September 26 in London, United Kingdom.
