Prime Minister Gaston Browne has hailed the nation's centenarians as "living treasures," crediting their sacrifices, resilience and lifelong contributions with helping to shape the Antigua and Barbuda that exists today.
According to Antigua News Room, Browne issued the tribute in a message marking Centenarian Week 2026, noting that the country's oldest citizens collectively represent more than 800 years of history and lived experience — spanning some of the most defining challenges and achievements in the nation's development.
"Today, we celebrate individuals who have shown great resilience, journeying through a century of life," Browne said. He described centenarians as embodiments of wisdom, faith, perseverance and a deep commitment to family and community.
The Prime Minister credited previous generations with laying the foundation for the nation's current progress, pointing to roads, institutions, freedoms and opportunities as part of the enduring legacy built through their determination and sacrifice.
Browne extended formal thanks to the centenarians for their contributions to nation-building and for the lasting impact they have had on their families and communities over the decades.
He further pledged the government's continued support for the elderly population, affirming that Antigua and Barbuda must ensure its oldest citizens live with dignity, respect, comfort and love.
The Prime Minister called on all citizens to engage with and listen to the stories and wisdom of older generations, describing Centenarian Week as an occasion to honour not only long lives, but lives that have left a meaningful mark on others.
Browne closed his message by extending congratulations and appreciation to all centenarians on behalf of the government and people of Antigua and Barbuda, wishing them continued health, happiness and peace.
