Motorists are no longer permitted to park along a section of High Street as construction of the new Performing Arts Centre enters a more intensive phase.
According to Antigua News Room, the restriction takes effect immediately and applies to the stretch of High Street between Cross Street and Temple Street. Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant announced the measure during Friday's post-Cabinet media briefing.
Merchant said the parking ban is designed to improve access for construction vehicles and ease congestion along the corridor. Contractors had been experiencing difficulty manoeuvring large trucks and heavy equipment through the area while vehicles remained parked along the roadway.
Cement trucks and other heavy vehicles regularly access the site, Merchant noted, making it essential to keep the road clear during active construction periods. The affected section encompasses the area immediately surrounding the Performing Arts Centre site and extends toward nearby businesses.
The Traffic Department was involved in discussions that led to the implementation of the restriction. Officials are urging motorists who conduct business in the area to make alternative parking arrangements.
The Performing Arts Centre remains one of the government's flagship infrastructure projects currently under development in St. John's.
