A set of steps blocking part of the sidewalk on Popeshead Street has been demolished, restoring safe pedestrian access along the busy thoroughfare.
According to Antigua News Room, Urban Renewal Minister Rawdon Turner shared video footage of the demolition on social media, noting that the obstruction had long created hazardous conditions for pedestrians in the area.
"If you've ever walked along Popeshead Street, you know exactly what I'm talking about," Turner said.
Pedestrians travelling through the area — including those heading into St. John's or accessing nearby businesses — had routinely been forced off the sidewalk and into oncoming traffic to navigate around the steps.
"Not anymore," Turner declared following the removal.
The minister described the demolition as a practical example of delivering meaningful improvements through targeted urban renewal efforts. The work is aimed at enhancing both pedestrian access and safety along one of the city's well-travelled streets.
