The Antigua and Barbuda Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) has paid tribute to the late Cheryl Mary-Clare Hurst, honouring her lifelong commitment to the labour movement and the working class of Antigua and Barbuda. According to Antigua News Room, the tribute was issued on June 1st, 2026, by AT&LU President Bernard de Nully on behalf of the union's Executive Committee, staff, and members.
In the statement, de Nully described Hurst as "a great daughter of the soil" who represented the labour movement wholeheartedly and carried a deep passion for protecting workers' rights across the twin-island nation.
Hurst served in several prominent roles throughout her career, including General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), Minister of State, and Senator. She was also a member of the ABLP Choir. The AT&LU noted that she consistently upheld the principles and values of the union across all of her duties.
"The AT&LU was a part of her, and she always included the principles and values of the Union in her daily duties," de Nully wrote.
The union's statement also drew on scripture, citing John 16:22 — "So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy" — as a source of comfort for those mourning her passing.
De Nully expressed that the AT&LU remains "forever indebted" to Hurst for her dedication, support, and loyalty to the trade labour movement and the working class.
The union extended its deepest condolences to the Hurst family and prayed for continued comfort during their time of bereavement. Hurst is remembered as a steadfast advocate for workers whose legacy will endure within the labour movement.
