The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) has reported significant progress in its response to a fuel oil seepage discovered at a storage tank at the former Friars Hill Power Station facility.
Response teams worked late into the night to contain the situation. All identified seepage areas have now been successfully contained, and cleanup activities across the facility are continuing.
Environmental risks associated with the incident have been significantly reduced through the coordinated efforts of APUA and its partners. Assessments conducted to date indicate there is currently no threat to nearby waterways.
Response efforts will now shift focus to the removal and proper disposal of materials used during the containment and cleanup process. All activities are being carried out in accordance with established environmental and public health protocols.
APUA expressed appreciation to the multiple agencies that contributed to the response, including the National Solid Waste Management Authority, the West Indies Oil Company (WIOC), the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS), the Department of Environment, the Central Board of Health, the Antigua and Barbuda Police Force, the Ministry of Works, the Ministry of Urban Transformation, and all other stakeholders involved.
The Authority also thanked the general public for their understanding and support during the incident.
