ST. JOHN'S, Antigua, June 1, 2026 — The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) has confirmed a fuel leak involving a storage tank at the former Friars Hill Facility, with containment efforts currently underway.
Upon becoming aware of the situation, APUA immediately activated internal response measures and engaged several key agencies to assess the situation and determine the most appropriate course of action. Those agencies include the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS), the Antigua and Barbuda Police Force, the Central Board of Health, and the Development Control Authority (DCA).
APUA is working to ensure containment mechanisms are in place and is actively consulting with the National Solid Waste Management Authority, the West Indies Oil Company (WIOC), the Department of Public Health, the Department of Environment, and other relevant stakeholders to coordinate and implement the necessary response measures.
Investigations and assessments remain ongoing. APUA has stated its commitment to addressing the matter in a safe, responsible, and environmentally sound manner, in close collaboration with all relevant agencies.
