Antigua and Barbuda's cultural and educational communities are mourning the loss of renowned choir director, educator, and mentor Dr. Renee Smith, who died early Thursday morning at the age of 48. Dr. Smith was widely celebrated for her years of dedicated service as director of the National Youth Choir, where she shaped and inspired generations of young singers through music, discipline, and mentorship. Her influence extended well beyond the choir stage, touching the lives of countless young people throughout Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Caribbean.
A gifted musician and accomplished academic, Dr. Smith also spearheaded the formation of the UWI Five Islands Singers, a vocal ensemble composed largely of former National Youth Choir members. Under her leadership, the group performed at local, regional, and international recitals and concerts, earning widespread praise for their musical excellence and professionalism.
Tributes describe Dr. Smith as a transformative figure whose passion for music and education left a lasting mark on all who knew her.
