Works Minister Maria Browne has been lauded for her leadership of a sweeping road improvement programme, with the government using Tuesday's Throne Speech to highlight major infrastructure upgrades across Antigua.
According to Antigua.news, Governor General Sir Rodney Williams used the address to spotlight a series of upgraded roadways, including the Sir George Walter Highway, Friars Hill Road, Sir Sidney Walling Highway, and Valley Road.
The Throne Speech described Browne as energetic, competent, and determined. The address also noted a historic distinction — she is the first woman to serve as Minister of Works.
The government acknowledged that the road improvement effort has not been without obstacles. Officials cited aging underground water pipes as a significant complicating factor, with the deteriorating infrastructure creating disruptions to repair works in several communities.
Despite those challenges, the administration maintained that road conditions across the island are steadily improving, even as major utility upgrade projects continue to cause periodic disruptions.
