Governor General Sir Rodney Williams used Tuesday's Throne Speech to strongly commend Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene, praising his diplomatic leadership as Antigua and Barbuda confronts mounting global tensions and economic uncertainty. Addressing the assembled legislators, Sir Rodney described foreign affairs as one of the most demanding portfolios for any small island developing state, warning that geopolitical conflicts beyond the country's control continue to generate serious economic pressures for Antigua and Barbuda.
"The management of our state's foreign affairs by a very skillful minister… demonstrates the sound reasons why faith is placed by my government in the Honourable Paul Chet Greene," Sir Rodney stated during the address.
The Governor General pointed specifically to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and escalating tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel as international crises driving up fuel, shipping, and consumer prices worldwide — burdens that fall disproportionately on small economies such as Antigua and Barbuda.
"Small states have played no role in starting these conflicts," Sir Rodney noted, while underscoring the importance of experienced diplomatic leadership during periods of international instability.
Sir Rodney also highlighted Antigua and Barbuda's continued commitment to regional integration through CARICOM, describing the bloc as essential to the country's stability and prosperity.
He praised Greene's stewardship of the nation's foreign policy and regional affairs, stating that the government remains confident in his capacity to safeguard Antigua and Barbuda's interests on the international stage.
The Governor General's remarks came as Parliament officially opened a new legislative term following the ruling administration's decisive victory in the April 30 general election.
