Antigua and Barbuda is stepping up its preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), forging a landmark partnership with the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) to advance green investment, climate resilience and tourism growth.
On May 21, Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment Michael Freeland met with SMI Chief Executive Jennifer Jordan-Saifi and members of her senior team in London. Director of Tourism for UK and Europe Cherrie Osborne and Third Secretary at the Antigua and Barbuda High Commission Caleb Gardiner also participated in the talks.
Founded by His Majesty King Charles III, the Sustainable Markets Initiative is a global CEO network focused on accelerating sustainable investment and solutions worldwide.
Discussions centred on developing practical, investment-ready initiatives that could be showcased at CHOGM and sustained well beyond the summit. Freeland positioned Antigua and Barbuda as an emerging leader in sustainable luxury tourism and reaffirmed the government's commitment to transforming Barbuda into a fully green and eco-friendly destination. He highlighted the recently opened airport and plans for expanded port infrastructure as evidence of that trajectory, while welcoming the SMI network as a strategic partner capable of translating ideas into measurable outcomes.
Osborne pointed to continued growth in the country's cruise, sailing and yachting sectors and called for coordinated regional investment strategies. She also raised concerns about the growing impact of sargassum on tourism and coastal communities, warning that the seaweed is curtailing tourism activity and threatening fisheries and livelihoods. The SMI's proposals for the commercial reutilisation of sargassum were explored as a potential avenue for both environmental protection and economic development.
Several areas for future collaboration were identified during the meetings, including sargassum management and reutilisation, disaster-risk insurance for climate-vulnerable nations, Barbuda's green transition, renewable energy projects, port modernisation, electric mobility infrastructure and coral reef restoration.
Officials also discussed sports diplomacy opportunities tied to CHOGM, among them a proposed cricket match expected to feature in the summit programme alongside an under-23 youth fixture. Sponsorship opportunities and support for a planned CHOGM concert were also on the agenda.
High Commissioner Karen-Mae Hill was credited with facilitating the discussions ahead of an anticipated SMI visit to Antigua and Barbuda in June. Speaking on her behalf, Gardiner said the country remains focused on converting international partnerships into meaningful action that delivers long-term environmental and economic benefits across the Commonwealth.
The 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is scheduled to take place in Antigua and Barbuda from November 1–4, 2026, under the theme: "Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth." The summit is expected to place significant emphasis on innovative financing and partnerships aimed at driving sustainable and inclusive development across member states.
