Tiffany Anthea Lauren Strann-Peters was sworn in as a Government Senator on Wednesday in a ceremony at Government House, with officials marking her appointment as a significant milestone for female representation in Antigua and Barbuda's Parliament.
According to Antigua News Room, Governor General Sir Rodney Williams presided over the ceremony and noted that the appointment carries national significance beyond Strann-Peters' personal achievement.
"With your inclusion, the total number of female senators named to date now rises to six," Sir Rodney said during the proceedings.
He added that when combined with women serving in the Lower House, female parliamentary representation now stands at eight members within the country's 34-member Parliament — among the highest levels in the nation's history.
Sir Rodney described the development as "important and encouraging" for democracy, stating that greater female participation strengthens governance and broadens perspectives in decision-making.
"It also sends a powerful message to our young women and girls of Antigua and Barbuda that leadership, public service and national contribution are open to all who are prepared to serve with excellence and with integrity," he said.
Strann-Peters took three updated constitutional oaths during the ceremony — the Oath of Allegiance, Oath of Office, and Oath of Secrecy. Officials noted that the oaths reflect Antigua and Barbuda's constitutional independence and its commitment to accountability in public service.
