Conditions inside His Majesty's Prison (HMP) have come under scrutiny once again after a Canadian man on remand for drug trafficking complained to a court on Wednesday that he is being bitten by bed bugs and wants to be moved from his current cell.
According to Antigua Observer, the accused, identified as Semand Vivan Shammo Aljndo, raised the issue before the court, bringing renewed attention to the state of the facility commonly referred to as '1735.'
The complaint marks the latest in a series of concerns raised about conditions inside the prison, with bed bug infestations previously drawing public attention to the welfare of inmates held at the institution.
Alindo's case centers on drug trafficking charges, for which he is currently being held on remand. His courtroom plea regarding the pest problem has once again placed prison authorities in the spotlight over the standard of living conditions afforded to those in their custody.
As reported by Antigua Observer, the accused expressed a desire to be relocated from his present cell, citing the physical discomfort caused by the infestation.
