The family of the driver involved in Tuesday's fatal traffic accident on All Saints Road has issued a public statement expressing heartbreak and sympathy following the crash that claimed the life of 29-year-old Okeen Lightfoot of Swetes Village.
According to Antigua.news, the statement was released Tuesday evening, with the family saying they were "heartbroken over the devastating events" that unfolded on May 12. They extended condolences to Lightfoot's relatives and loved ones.
"We extend our deepest condolences, prayers, and sympathy to the family and loved ones of Okeen Lightfoot, who lost his life," the statement read. "We recognize that many persons are hurting, grieving, and searching for answers during this incredibly difficult time."
The accident occurred earlier Tuesday when a motor bus reportedly travelling east along All Saints Road allegedly lost control and veered off the roadway, striking a National Solid Waste Management Authority worker. Lightfoot was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash remain ongoing.
The family confirmed that their son and relatives have been left deeply shaken by the tragedy and stated they are cooperating fully with authorities.
"Our son and our entire family are deeply shaken and devastated by what has happened," the statement said. "Out of respect for the ongoing investigation, we are limited in what we can say publicly at this time, but we want the community to know that we are fully cooperating with authorities."
The family also extended prayers to first responders and others emotionally affected by the incident. "Our thoughts and prayers remain with everyone affected by this tragedy, for the family who lost their loved one, for all first responders involved, and for all those carrying emotional pain in the aftermath of this incident," the statement concluded.
