Governor General Sir Rodney Williams has praised the resilience of Senator-designate Jamilla Kirwan, who returned to the Senate on Monday to be sworn into office while grieving the recent death of her mother. According to Antigua News Room, the swearing-in ceremony took place at Government House, where Sir Rodney acknowledged the profound emotional weight of the occasion.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Governor General noted that Kirwan was taking her oath of office even as her family prepared to lay her mother to rest later this week.
"Today's occasion is also touched by personal sorrow," Sir Rodney said. "Even as Senator-designate Kirwan prepares to take the oath of office, she does so during a period of bereavement following the passing of her beloved mother."
Sir Rodney described Kirwan's late mother as one of her "greatest supporters and strongest sources of encouragement," and extended condolences to the senator and her family on behalf of the occasion.
The Governor General said Kirwan's decision to press forward with her duties despite her loss reflected a rare courage that serves as an example to others.
"Yet, even in grief, there are examples of strength that inspire us," he said.
Sir Rodney also reflected on the roots of such resilience, suggesting it is often forged through family values and upbringing.
"There's courage that comes not only from experience, but from upbringing — not only from circumstance, but from the values, resilience and determination passed on from one generation to the other," the Governor General said.
He added that Kirwan was entering the Upper House carrying more than her own ambitions. "Senator-designate Kirwan moves forward today carrying not only her own aspirations, but also the enduring influence and spirit of a mother whose support helped shape the woman that she has become," Sir Rodney said.
The ceremony marked Kirwan's return to the Senate following her initial appointment as an independent senator on November 27, 2025. Sir Rodney noted that her first period of service, though brief, had already demonstrated her capacity to contribute meaningfully to national discourse and legislative review.
The Governor General also took the opportunity to acknowledge the importance of family and community support in sustaining those who choose public life.
"To her family and friends gathered here this afternoon, I want to thank you for your support and encouragement, because public service is demanding," he said.
Kirwan later spoke emotionally about her mother's influence, expressing her intention to continue walking in the legacy her mother had built for her and her children.
