The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) has launched a forceful defence of its integrity following public allegations made by former Deputy Chairman Bruce Goodwin concerning the conduct and independence of the country's April 30 general election.
According to Antigua.news, ABEC Chairman Arthur G.B. Thomas delivered a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, accusing Goodwin of making "false, reckless and wholly unsubstantiated allegations" during an appearance on the programme I on the Issue, hosted by Louis Atwell.
Thomas stated that the Commission "categorically rejects in their entirety" any claims seeking to undermine both the legitimacy of the election and the independence of the electoral body.
The Commission also made clear that its systems and procedures are not directed by any political party.
