Newly sworn-in Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle has lauded the senators selected to serve alongside him, describing them as experienced, committed, and well-positioned to strengthen democracy in Antigua and Barbuda. According to Antigua.news, Pringle made the remarks Monday during an official swearing-in ceremony at the restored Government House, where Governor General Sir Rodney Williams formally appointed him Opposition Leader.
Addressing supporters, party members, dignitaries, and invited guests, Pringle thanked Sir Rodney Williams for presiding over the ceremony and expressed gratitude to all who attended in support of the United Progressive Party and its new parliamentary team.
"It is always a pleasure to work with you and your fine staff," Pringle told the Governor General, while also thanking supporters for the "pride, love and support" shown toward the new senators and the party.
Pringle singled out newly appointed Senator Chester Hughes for praise, describing him as "a political veteran, a seasoned parliamentarian, and unwavering trade unionist" who has consistently advocated for the working class. He also highlighted Senator Jonathan Wehner, calling him "a young man with an old head on his shoulder" and describing him as a legal scholar, gifted communicator, and a positive role model for young people across the country.
Senator Ashworth Azille also received commendation. Pringle noted that Azille had been described as "our Martin Luther King," praising his advocacy on behalf of workers and his decades of service as an educator committed to Antigua and Barbuda.
Pringle also addressed the absence of senator-designate Malaka Parker, explaining she was overseas attending to family business and would be sworn in at a later date. He noted that Parker is nearing completion of her law degree and pointed to her experience across government, the trade union movement, and the private sector.
"She will continue to stand as a model of achievement for our women and girls," Pringle said.
The Opposition Leader added that the appointments have already been well received by the public and that the senators carry the full confidence of the United Progressive Party. "The United Progressive Party and I have the utmost confidence in their abilities and in their commitment to the business of state," he stated.
Pringle closed his remarks with a direct charge to the incoming senators, urging them to carry out their responsibilities with pride. "Our democracy is counting on you," he declared.
