The Antigua and Barbuda Workers' Union (ABWU) has extended congratulations to its Deputy General Secretary, Chester Hughes, following his appointment to the Senate of Antigua and Barbuda. According to Antigua News Room, the union described itself as elated by the elevation of Hughes — whom it called an esteemed champion for workers — to the prominent national role.
"We have complete confidence that Senator Hughes will serve with distinction and in the best interest of all citizens and residents of Antigua and Barbuda," ABWU General Secretary David Massiah said.
Hughes has spent nearly his entire professional career advocating for the well-being, advancement, and protection of workers across the twin-island nation. His commitment to social justice, equity, and national development has earned him widespread respect within the labour movement and broader society.
During his tenure at the ABWU, Hughes has represented hundreds of workers at every level, including before the Industrial Court. He is recognised as a skilled negotiator of collective bargaining agreements and a key architect of policies aimed at improving the lives of workers and their families. At the international level, he continues to serve as a member of the World Executive Body of Union Network International (UNI).
Beyond his trade union career, Hughes has a notable history in public service. He served as a Parliamentarian under former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer between 2004 and 2014, representing All Saints East and St. Luke in the Lower House and also serving as Deputy Speaker. He has previously held the role of Opposition Senator as well.
Hughes recently added an academic achievement to his credentials, completing a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Arden University in the United Kingdom with Upper Second Class Honours. He is currently preparing to sit the Bar in London, having been granted student membership with the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple.
The ABWU expressed confidence that Hughes' broad experience in labour relations, governance, advocacy, and law positions him well to make a meaningful contribution in the Upper House. The union wished him every success as he begins this new chapter of national service.
