The government signalled its intended leadership structure for the Senate on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed senators at Government House.
Senator Alincia Williams-Grant is expected to be nominated as President of the Senate when the Upper House convenes on May 20. Philip Shoul is also expected to be nominated as Deputy President. The announcements were made by the master of ceremonies during the proceedings.
The occasion marked the formal swearing-in of 10 government senators following the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party's victory in the April 30 general election.
Officials also confirmed during the ceremony that Senator Shenella Govia will serve as Leader of Government Business in the Senate. Govia was additionally sworn in as Minister of State within the Ministry of Housing and Works.
The ceremony before Governor General Sir Rodney Williams included the administration of the oath of allegiance, oath of office, and oath of secrecy to each senator, after which Sir Rodney formally presented instruments of appointment.
Attendees were also reminded that the House of Representatives is scheduled to meet on May 18 to elect a Speaker and Deputy Speaker, ahead of the Senate's convening on May 20 to formally elect its own presiding officers.
