Representative-elect for All Saints East and St. Luke, Jamale Pringle, will officially assume the role of Leader of the Opposition on Monday when he is sworn in at a ceremony at Government House.
According to Antigua.news, the United Progressive Party (UPP) announced the appointment in a statement issued Friday, which also confirmed the four individuals selected to represent the Opposition in the Senate.
Governor General Sir Rodney Williams is expected to administer the swearing-in at 1 p.m. on May 11.
Pringle named Chester Hughes, Jonathan Wehner, Malaka Parker and Ashworth Azille as the Opposition's Senate representatives.
In the statement, Pringle said the appointments form part of the party's effort to rebuild and strengthen its parliamentary representation following the recent general election. "I am confident that these colleagues will bring to the Senate the representation the Party needs at this time of rebuilding and the quality of debate the Nation needs to keep the Browne Administration accountable," Pringle said.
Pringle said the selections were made with both the party's immediate needs and long-term goals in mind. He noted that the appointments are intended to enhance the UPP's political capacity while helping to lay the foundation for a future administration.
The Opposition Leader-designate also urged party supporters and members of the public to support the incoming senators as they prepare to take up their responsibilities in the Upper House.
The announcements follow a general election in which the UPP retained its position as the country's main opposition party, despite holding fewer seats in Parliament.
