Lamin Newton has been reappointed as an Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) senator following his defeat in last week's general election — the only loss suffered by the ruling party at the polls. According to Antigua.news, Newton was sworn in to the Upper House on Friday, returning to parliament through the appointed senate route.

Newton had contested the All Saints East and St. Luke constituency but lost the seat to United Progressive Party Political Leader Jamale Pringle in one of the most closely watched races of the April 30 general election. The contest drew significant national attention, with the constituency widely regarded as a major political battleground.

Pringle held the seat for the opposition, while the ABLP secured a commanding national victory, winning 15 of the 17 seats contested. Newton's defeat stood as the sole blemish on an otherwise dominant performance by the Gaston Browne-led administration.

The swift reappointment signals that the administration retains full confidence in Newton, moving quickly to keep him within its parliamentary structure despite the electoral setback. Newton had been a visible and active figure throughout the ABLP's campaign in the lead-up to polling day.

His return to the Senate is expected to ensure his continued involvement in government business and party affairs, even without securing a seat in the Lower House.
