Dear Editor,
Following the recent swearing-in of government ministers, Prime Minister Gaston Browne publicly announced that succession planning for the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) must begin now, according to Antigua News Room. The statement has sparked discussion about who may one day lead both the party and the nation.
While the announcement was not entirely surprising, in my view PM Browne — with God's continued blessings of health and strength — has at least another ten years at the helm of the ABLP. Even so, the question of succession is now firmly on the table.
The ABLP currently counts several young and capable individuals among its ranks. If these rising figures are groomed for leadership from this point forward, I would stake my last dollar on Hon. Michael Joseph emerging as the candidate most likely to become this nation's next prime minister.
Should Michael Joseph rise to that office, it would mark yet another historic milestone for the constituency of St. John's Rural West — a constituency that would then have produced three prime ministers.
His current appointment as Minister of Health, one of the highest offices in government, was no accident. It reflects careful and deliberate assessment of his abilities. Hon. Michael Joseph has demonstrated that he has what it takes. His charisma and intellect will, in my view, propel him into the nation's top seat.
It must also be noted that Richard Lewis, another individual from St. John's Rural West who similarly possesses the qualities of a prime minister, will likely miss that opportunity — not due to any lack of ability, but simply because he finds himself aligned with the wrong party.
