The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has paid tribute to the late Mary-Clare Hurst, honouring her as a devoted public servant, committed party stalwart and pioneering national figure whose contributions to the country and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party will long be remembered.
Cabinet members observed a moment of silence in her honour, reflecting on her years of dedicated service to national development and political organisation. Prime Minister Gaston Browne and ministers praised Hurst's unwavering loyalty, professionalism and commitment to strengthening both the Labour Party and the institutions of Antigua and Barbuda.
Hurst broke barriers throughout her distinguished career, becoming the first woman to serve as General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party. She also served as a government senator, Leader and Deputy Leader of Government Business in the Senate, and Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism and Economic Development. The Cabinet further recognised her leadership at the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority, where she served as Chairman and earned widespread respect for her professionalism and administrative competence.
Ministers acknowledged Hurst's passion for mentorship, youth development and public service, noting that she played an important role in nurturing young leaders and helping to modernise political and public sector institutions. The Cabinet described her as a resilient, compassionate and disciplined individual whose legacy of service will continue to inspire future generations.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions to national development and public service, the Cabinet announced that the late Mary-Clare Hurst will be accorded an Official Funeral. The Cabinet extended its profound gratitude for her many years of loyal and distinguished service to the people of Antigua and Barbuda and offered sincere condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and supporters.
