Prime Minister Gaston Browne has declared there is "no guarantee" he will lead the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) into another general election campaign, according to Antigua News Room.
Speaking to State Media, Browne said the party must prioritise strengthening its second-tier leadership and preparing the next generation of political figures to carry the ABLP forward.
The Prime Minister has led the party to four consecutive general election victories. He noted that political leadership ultimately depends on public support, and that succession planning must be approached with clear-eyed realism.
"There's no guarantee that I will be your leader going to the fifth term," Browne said. He added that he applies a "scientific" approach to politics and the monitoring of public opinion.
The remarks came just days after the ABLP secured a commanding victory in the April 30 general election, claiming 15 of the country's 17 parliamentary seats.
Browne cautioned that the party cannot afford to rely on any single individual. He stressed the importance of cultivating capable leaders who can sustain the party's strength in the years ahead.
"We have to develop a second tier of leadership within the party," he said, while also warning that internal divisions could prove damaging to party unity.
