World Press Freedom Day is shining a renewed spotlight on the vital role of a free and independent press in upholding human rights, supporting development, and safeguarding global security. According to Antigua News Room, the observance also draws attention to the persistent challenges journalists face, including censorship, misinformation, and threats to their personal safety.
This year's theme — "Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security" — reflects a growing international consensus that press freedom is fundamental to peaceful and resilient societies. When journalists are able to report freely and accurately, they help prevent conflict, strengthen accountability, and foster informed public dialogue.
As the media landscape continues to evolve amid rising disinformation and public disengagement, journalism is increasingly shifting toward solutions-oriented reporting. This approach aims to help audiences better understand complex issues while identifying constructive paths forward.
In keeping with these priorities, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) has continued to promote peace journalism as a practical extension of press freedom. The organisation's approach emphasises reporting that explores the root causes of conflict, incorporates diverse perspectives, and highlights opportunities for resolution.
HWPL has advanced peace journalism through its work in Washington, D.C. and internationally, guided by the vision of Chairman Lee Man-hee, who has stated: "To attain world peace, all journalists must frequently report on peace."
The organisation recently convened approximately 220 journalists from around the world for its International Workshop on Peace Journalism Studies. Discussions centred on rebuilding trust in media, addressing polarisation, and advancing accurate, balanced, and solutions-based reporting. The event also emphasised the need for journalism to contribute positively to society — principles closely aligned with the objectives of World Press Freedom Day.
"As we observe World Press Freedom Day, we are reminded that press freedom is inseparable from peace," an HWPL representative stated. As global challenges intensify, World Press Freedom Day remains both a celebration and a call to action, urging continued support for press freedom and the kind of responsible journalism that advances human dignity and lasting peace.
