A magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck the northeastern Caribbean earlier today, with Antigua and Barbuda among the nearest populated areas to the epicentre, according to Antigua.news.
The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre reported the quake hit at 11:36 a.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre was located approximately 138 kilometres southeast of St. John's.
Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis was the nearest populated centre, sitting 103 kilometres to the north-northeast of the epicentre. Brades, Montserrat was the third nearest populated area, located 158 kilometres to the north-northwest.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are generally considered minor. They are often felt by residents but rarely result in structural damage.
The UWI Seismic Research Centre noted that the epicentre location is preliminary, having been automatically calculated by computer algorithms. The data remains subject to revision pending full evaluation by analysts.
