United Progressive Party Leader Jamale Pringle used his Labour Day address at the Antigua and Barbuda Workers' Union rally to salute workers and champion unity, affirming that the contributions of the working class remain central to national development.
According to Antigua News Room, Pringle opened his remarks with greetings to the union's executive, president, and general secretary, praising those "who work tirelessly to keep this union going in the interest of the working class."
The opposition leader told union members, leadership, and supporters that Labour Day represents more than a public holiday. He described it as a reflection of the effort and sacrifice of workers across the country.
"Labour Day is not just a holiday. It is a celebration of dedication, skill, and the countless hours that keep our industries, businesses, and neighborhoods thriving," Pringle said.
He pointed to the broader societal impact of workers, noting that their contributions extend well beyond economic output. "Your hard work… builds families, dreams, and the future of our nation," he added, while acknowledging the daily challenges workers face and their resilience in overcoming them.
Pringle also stressed the need for fair treatment in the workplace, stating that "every worker deserves respect, fair treatment, and opportunity."
Unity formed the centrepiece of his address. Urging collective action as the path to progress, he told the crowd: "Progress is made together… we have to be united."
He closed with expressions of solidarity, declaring support for the working class and the union. "Long live the United Progressive Party. Long live the working class. Long live the Antigua Barbuda Workers Union," Pringle said.
