Prime Minister Gaston Browne has publicly called on United Progressive Party (UPP) Chair D. Gisele Isaac to resign in the wake of the party's defeat in the April 30 general election, insisting that its leadership must be held accountable for the result.
According to Antigua News Room, Browne made the remarks during the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM on Saturday, stating that Isaac had previously signalled her intention to step down and should now honour that commitment.
"She had said to a number of her colleagues that she would resign, and now is the time for her to resign. I don't know what she's waiting for," Browne said.
He went further, urging Isaac to "leave office" and "resign as chairman of UPP" in order to give the party space to rebuild.
Browne's comments follow a decisive victory for his Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), which captured 15 of the 17 parliamentary seats contested, inflicting significant losses on the UPP.
During the same broadcast, Browne sharply criticised the opposition's campaign strategy and internal organisation, describing the party as disunited and lacking clear direction. He said UPP leadership had failed to connect with voters, and warned that resistance to meaningful change could deepen the party's decline.
The prime minister characterised the current moment as a critical juncture for the UPP, arguing that serious reform — including new leadership and fresh talent — is essential if the party hopes to reclaim political relevance.
Isaac has not publicly responded to Browne's remarks.
