Prime Minister Gaston Browne has used his first address following his swearing-in to call for national unity, political civility, and a renewed commitment to truth in public life, according to Antigua.news.
Speaking shortly after being sworn in for a historic fourth term, Browne thanked the people of Antigua and Barbuda for delivering what he described as a strong and decisive mandate, stating that the outcome of the general elections reflected the will of the people "resoundingly and with clarity."
The Prime Minister directed sharp criticism at the misinformation and disinformation that characterised the campaign period, warning that false narratives not only divide the country but damage its international reputation.
"We now live in a global village," Browne said, cautioning that misleading information spreads beyond the nation's borders and can negatively affect how Antigua and Barbuda is perceived abroad.
He expressed hope that the election results would usher in a more respectful political environment, urging leaders on both sides to embrace honesty and responsible conduct. "I'm hoping that politics will become more civil," he stated, adding that truth must remain the foundation of public discourse.
Describing his fourth-term mandate as "humbling," Browne said it has strengthened his resolve to serve the people and improve living standards across the country. He pledged to work "unrelentingly" to advance development and expand opportunities for citizens.
The Prime Minister also issued a call for collective nation-building, encouraging citizens to take pride in their communities and actively contribute to the country's progress. He outlined a vision encompassing stronger infrastructure, enhanced social and cultural development, and positioning Antigua and Barbuda as a leading example within the region.
Browne further emphasised accountability within his administration, making clear that public officials will be expected to serve with integrity and manage state resources responsibly. He also extended an olive branch to those who did not support his party, encouraging inclusivity and participation in national development regardless of political affiliation.
Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin was sworn in alongside the Prime Minister as the new administration begins its latest term following Thursday's landslide election victory. Additional Cabinet ministers are expected to be sworn in on Tuesday.
