The Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF), in collaboration with the Fisheries Division, has announced the annual closed season for spiny lobster and chub/parrotfish, effective May 1, 2026.
The measure is mandated under national fisheries regulations to protect marine resources during their breeding period and ensure long-term sustainability. The restrictions — which prohibit the catching, selling, buying, and possession of the covered species — apply to all individuals, restaurants, vendors, and exporters operating within Antigua and Barbuda.
The closed season for spiny lobster runs from May 1 to June 30, 2026. The closed season for chub/parrotfish extends through July 31, 2026.
The ABDF and Fisheries Division will conduct compliance checks at ports, restaurants, fish markets, and coastal areas throughout both periods. Violations of the closed season regulations may result in fines of up to $50,000 XCD, confiscation of catch, and possible prosecution under national fisheries law.
Officials note that protecting spiny lobster during its breeding season safeguards future stock for local fisheries and exports. Parrotfish play a vital role in reef health, grazing on algae and maintaining coral balance — making their protection equally critical to the broader marine ecosystem.
The ABDF urged all citizens, fishermen, vendors, and businesses to comply fully with the regulations, stating that the initiative supports the sustainability of Antigua and Barbuda's marine biodiversity and secures the livelihoods of communities dependent on fishing.
