A 15-year vision for specialised medical care in Antigua and Barbuda is on the verge of becoming reality, as officials at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) have confirmed a major step forward in the establishment of the country's first dedicated Sickle Cell Unit.
According to Antigua Observer, preparations for the unit's official launch are now underway at the SLBMC, marking a significant milestone in the nation's efforts to provide targeted care for patients living with sickle cell disease.
The development represents the culmination of more than a decade and a half of planning and advocacy aimed at addressing the needs of those affected by the condition, which is among the most prevalent inherited blood disorders in the Caribbean region.
