The Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC), Arthur G.B. Thomas, has called on citizens to exercise their democratic right as polling stations remain open across the country.
According to Antigua News Room, Thomas issued the appeal Thursday morning, describing election day as a pivotal moment for national decision-making and urging full public participation.
"Today is the day that you exercise your voice… through democratic choice," he said.
Thomas reminded voters that polling stations opened at 6 a.m. and will close at 6 p.m., urging all eligible electors to cast their ballots before the deadline. "Come out and play your part in shaping the future of your country," he said.
The ABEC chairman also stressed the requirement for voters to present a valid voter identification card at the polls. "Remember, you must have your voter's identification card in order to vote," Thomas said.
He praised the Electoral Commission's preparations to ensure broad access to the voting process, stating that measures had been put in place to prevent any eligible voter from being disenfranchised.
Thomas further appealed for calm and orderly conduct throughout the day, calling on citizens to uphold the country's democratic traditions. "Let us make this a day defined by peace, respect and unity," he said, urging voters to follow the rules and support election officials.
The chairman also called on the public to accept the declared outcome of the vote, framing this acceptance as a cornerstone of democratic governance. "Let us also respect the outcome… that is the true strength of a democratic [process]," he said.
His remarks come as voters across Antigua and Barbuda head to the polls to determine the next government, with authorities underscoring that peaceful participation is essential to a credible election.
