The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) convened a high-level meeting with local, regional, and international observers Tuesday as part of its final preparatory activities ahead of General Elections scheduled for Thursday, April 30, 2026. According to Antigua News Room, the engagement took place at the John E. St. Luce Financial Centre and served as a platform to brief observers on electoral procedures, operational readiness, and the Commission's commitment to a transparent and credible electoral process.
Commission Chairman His Excellency Ambassador Arthur G. B. Thomas welcomed observers and underscored their critical role in strengthening public confidence in the democratic process.
"Your presence here reflects a shared commitment to upholding the principles of democracy, transparency, and accountability," Ambassador Thomas stated. "The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission has worked diligently to ensure that every eligible voter is afforded the opportunity to participate freely and fairly in these elections. We welcome your oversight and value your contribution to reinforcing the integrity of our electoral system."
Ambassador Thomas further emphasized ABEC's adherence to established electoral laws, regional best practices, and international standards, affirming that the Commission remains steadfast in its duty to conduct elections that reflect the will of the people.
Supervisor of Elections Mr. Ian S. Hughes provided observers with a detailed overview of the Commission's extensive preparations. These include finalization of the voters' list, training of election officials, distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials, and the implementation of logistical and security arrangements across all polling districts.
Mr. Hughes also highlighted ongoing voter education initiatives designed to ensure electors are well-informed about voting procedures, polling locations, and their rights and responsibilities on Election Day.
"We have placed significant emphasis on readiness, accuracy, and efficiency," Mr. Hughes explained. "Our teams have been working assiduously to ensure that all systems are in place for a smooth electoral process. We remain confident in our preparations and committed to facilitating an orderly and credible election."
Observers were briefed on polling day protocols, counting procedures, and the transmission of results. They were also given the opportunity to engage directly with ABEC officials, fielding questions to both the Chairman and the Supervisor of Elections to further their understanding of the process.
ABEC reiterated its commitment to transparency and called on all stakeholders — including voters, political parties, and observers — to work collaboratively toward a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
