Philbert Mason, a veteran meteorologist whose steady voice guided Antigua and Barbuda through decades of hurricane seasons, has died. According to Antigua News Room, Mason was a well-known and trusted presence whose passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the nation.
Mason was a familiar face on ABS Television, delivering weather forecasts that residents relied upon during periods of severe meteorological threat. His calm, authoritative broadcasts were widely credited with helping families prepare ahead of approaching storms.
He played a significant role during some of the country's most challenging weather events, including Hurricane Hugo and Hurricane Luis, providing timely and critical updates as Antigua and Barbuda faced uncertainty and danger.
Mason later rose to serve as Director of the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services. In recognition of his dedication to meteorology and public service, he was honoured during the nation's 1995 Independence celebrations.
Beyond his professional contributions, Mason was an active supporter of the local calypso community. He was a regular presence at Carnival events and took on the role of presenting the Best Social Commentary Award at the Calypso Monarch competition, endearing him to cultural circles as well as the broader public.
Tributes from colleagues, friends, and members of the public have described him as both a respected professional and a valued cultural figure. He is survived by his family, friends, and former colleagues.
